Pioneering ophthalmologist Dr. Patricia Bath (1942-2019), just made history by becoming one of the first Black women to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
In honor of this historic achievement, WERSTEM was born, the only site where official Dr. Patricia Bath merchandise can be purchased.
With contemporary designs inspired by Dr. Bath’s life and work, proceeds from every purchase will help fund scholarships for under-represented students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math across the academic spectrum.
Why was it established?
Dr. Patricia Bath and Dr. Eraka Bath decided to form WERSTEM, LLC to champion inclusive excellence in access to STEM education and innovation. Throughout her career, and especially over her last decade in life, as a grandmother, Dr. Patricia Bath focused many of her outreach efforts to children, particularly those who were school aged. She recognized that the children are our future and wanted to make sure that the spark of innovation is kindled early and equitably. She is a role model that has been the subject of several children’s books, posters and school projects for both women’s history and Black history month. The life and legacy of Dr. Patricia Bath represents possibility and the notion of “You have to see it to be it."
Timeline of events that led to this idea?
In 2018, Dr. Patricia and Eraka Bath recognized the gaps in intersectional approaches to STEM excellence, particularly among the youngest children and those from racially minoritized populations. The goal of WERSTEM, LLC is to raise money and awareness on gender and racial parity gaps in innovation and medical technology by funding scholarship for student across the
academic pipeline and developmental continuum.
